1998
Port Angeles Delegation
to Japan

By: Kim

Have you ever experienced something so incredibily fun that you just can't describe it? Well that's how I feel about my trip to Japan. During the short time I spent in there, I learned many new things about making friends, different cultures, and life in general. This trip has really taught me to be open minded about new things and even if it seems a little strange try it anyway, because you might not get another chance!

The Port Angeles Delegation arrived at the Sea Tac Airport to board the plane to Narita. After a thirteen hour flight to Japan, we landed and rode a bus to our hotel. By that time we were all pretty tired, but we went to a small shopping center and had dinner. Mallory, Trisha, and I went to a near by Mc Donalds and had the familiar hamburger and french fries. After we shopped a little we went back to the hotel, where we all crashed for the night.

Today we woke up and met down at the lobby, for a day filled with sightseeing around Tokyo. We were supposed to go to the fish market, but it was closed so we went back to the hotel and rested for a while. We went to the Meiji Shrine where we had the chance to walk around and shop. Then we went to Asakusa Temple and went sightseeing and had Yakisoba for lunch. That night we went back to the hotel and went to bed.

After we checked out of our hotel we took the Yamabiko Bullet Train to Mutsu City, where we were greeted by the city members and taken to meet our host families. After introductions they took me a department store and I had the chance to shop and look around. Then they took me home and I had dinner then went to bed.

This morning I woke up, had breakfast and went to school with my host girl, Kaori. I had a really great time going to the different classes and meeting all the students. I especially enjoyed one english class where all the students introduced themselves and showed me something that they liked. That night we went to the Mustu City Gym and had a fun time playing games and learning Japanese dances. After that, Jill, Trisha, and their host families all came over to my house and we lit fireworks.

Today we went sightseeing around Mutsu with our host students. We went to Ozore Zan, a shrine, and a lighthouse where we had lunch and took a lot of pictures. Then we went to a recreation center relaxed for a while and took our shower and had dinner. We also carved little airplane type objects and made key chains. Then went to bed, but before we got into bed the students staying with me taught me a Japanese card game.

We all woke up and had breakfast then cleaned the recreaction center. Then we left and went to the schools to partipate in the sports festival, with Jill, Bethany, Trisha, and Tracie. Jill and I were on the same team and we had the opportunity to practice jump roping with the others. After that I went back to my host family's house and got ready for the farewell party. They dressed me up in a purple floral kimono and did my hair, which was probably my fondest memory. That night a lot of tears were shed and good-byes were said.

This morning we left for Shimokita Cultural Hall and said one last farewell before boarding the bus and leaving for Narita. That night the Port Angeles Delegation went down to have dinner and went shopping at a center called Daiei.
